Tour of the island

Koh Samui's beaches

Chaweng Beach, 7km long, is Samui's most popular and lively beach. There are many shops, bars, restaurants and discos. that offers you all kinds of music from traditional Thai to Jazz, rock and reggae. If you have kids, there is also a playroom in Chaweng, with European management, where they can find other kids to play with so you can have a few hours by yourself.

Maenam Beach is a 4 km long smooth white sand beach where there are windsurfing facilities and several small restaurants and bungalows on the beach. There is no nightlife in Maenam but it's a fantastic place to spend a day or your afternoons with friends or family.

Bo Phut Beach is 2 km long and located on the north side of Samui. It is one of the oldest equipped beaches on Samui. In Bo Phut village, you also find a lot of fish restaurants on the beach. Bo Phut is called the fisherman village because it has Samui's best selection of seafood.
On Big Buddha Beach you will find a 12-meter tall Buddha statue which belongs to the Wat Phra Yai temple. This is one of Samui's most popular sights and it's even more impressive when lit up at night. There is no city as such, but there are a lot of gift shops, restaurants and bungalows nearby. Remember to respect the religious significance of the icon by wearing long trousers and shirts.

Lamai Beach is Samui's second most popular beach. Lamai is a beautiful place to go and if you walk to the back of the beach road, you will find yourself in the heart of banana groves and coconut plantations. After dark, Lamai forgets  its sleepy daytime look and turns into an authentic nightlife place. There are also some great Thai restaurants to discover.

Hua Thanon  is the biggest local fishing boats stopping point on the island. It is a charming area where the majority of the fishermen are Muslims. This community is well known for their colorful boats.

Chaweng Noi Beach is just around the rocks, at the south end of Chaweng beach. It's a lot quieter and less developed than Chaweng but it still has a lot of small beach restaurants with a very pleasant atmosphere, and the beach itself is wonderful.

Ban Po Bay is filled with coral reefs and together with its calm water, it's one of the best places for snorkeling.

Choeng Mon Beach, this small beach, located just a few minutes North of Chaweng, is one of our favorites. It is quieter and not so developped. The beach is beautiful and it is a good place for swimming. You can stop at "Otto's Restaurant" to enjoy a drink or a meal whilst relaxing under the sun on the transats available for Papillon's guests...

Places to visit

Na Muang No. 1 is an easily accessible waterfall between Hua Thanon and Nathon. It's just at the end of a concrete road. Rocks and tree roots are forming a natural staircase leading to a large pool at the base of the waterfall.

Na Muang No. 2, it will take you 10 minutes climbing up a rocky path to get to to the base of the most beautiful waterfall on Samui. Another 20 minute walk will bring you to the top, it may be hard work for some but the view surpasses everything. It is well worth the effort and don't forget to take your bathing suit as you can have a refreshing swim at the top, in a lovely lagoon overlooking the entire island. If you have any interest in visiting waterfalls, you should not miss the Na Muang 1 & 2.

Hin-Ta et Hin-Yai, also called Grandfather and Grandmother rocks. These rocks are located at the end of Lamai, and are one of Samui's natural wonders. This is also the best place to buy the beautiful bowls and vases which are one of the the best handcraft Samui has to offer. Made of local coconut palm wood they are the perfect souvenirs to remind you of your trip to paradise in years to come.

Nathon is the capital of the island but it is no longer the biggest town. All public offices and banks are located there, as well as the ferries going to Koh Pha-Ngan and mainland.

If you want to go shopping, this is the place to go. The shops are similar to the ones in Chaweng but cheaper. This is a daytime shopping area: in the evening the shops open stalls along Chaweng's mainstreet. If you enjoy all the beautiful colors and fragrances of the east, you should definitely visit the local market in Nathon where many hotels buy their supplies, such as vegetable, fresh meat and fish. Not to be missed! If you visit Nathon in the evening, you have to remember to see the gorgeous sunset, where the sun dips into the sea behind Angtong National Marine Park.
